12 facts you didn’t know about Ventura, CA

http://www.city-data.com/city/Ventura-California.html

Ventura is a medium to large sized city which is the county seat of Ventura County, California. It is the 56th largest community in the state and has approximately 27 neighborhoods. It is a coastal city blessed with gorgeous ocean views and a comfortable beach community atmosphere. Though most people call it Ventura, the city’s true name is the City of San Buenaventura. It is a nautical community with a rich maritime history and countless water and waterfront activities. It is a perfect fit for people in every stage of life but is especially popular with young upwardly mobile singles and couples. It is an educated community where over 33% of adults over 25 hold four-year degrees or more, well above the national average for U.S. communities. It is also an extremely diverse city in terms of race, ethnicity, religion and more. Common ancestries among residents of Ventura are German, Irish, English, Italian, French and others.  Over 15% of Ventura residents were born outside of the United States. The number one written and spoken language in the community is English, followed by Spanish and Tagalog.

The city spans 32.25 square miles, nearly 22 square miles of land area and nearly 10.5 square miles of water. It is an upper-middle class community compared to state economic standards and a wealthy community when compared to national economic standards. It has a mixed workforce of white, blue and no-collar workers. The 2018 estimated population of Ventura was 111,128 and the approximate population density of the city is around 51,000 people per square mile. In 2016, the estimated median household income in the city was $69,933 and the estimated per capita income was $35,598. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value in the city was $545,649 and the mean price on all housing units was $593,881.

The Ventura area has been inhabited for thousands of years. Before the arrival of European explorers and settlers, the area was inhabited by the native Chumash tribes. The Chumash were hunter-gatherers and navigated the waters along the coast enjoying the abundance of the land and the waters. The first Spanish mission was established in March of 1782 by Father Junipero Serra. The mission was named in honor of Saint Bonaventure. After the establishment of the mission a community soon grew up around it. The community was named after the mission and incorporated in April of 1866. The mission still stands today, and it and other early buildings are not the historic heart of the city located in the downtown area. Fun fact, because it is such a historic city with many historic structures and a rich history it has become quite popular with ghost hunting groups.
